Organic gardening doesn’t make use of synthetic fertilizers or pesticides, which means that it is a natural way of gardening. Although regular gardening can be easier as you can easily control weeds and insects with repellents, organic gardening provides a challenge as lots of attention needs to be paid to soil type and fertility and is therefore much more enjoyable.
Since there are no synthetic fertilizers being used, gardeners need to actively add organic material to the soil to keep it fertile and high in productivity. Natural compost is vital to keeping plants healthy and can be cheaply and easily. All you need is vegetable left over (raw); dead flowers and leaves; vegetable left overs (raw); cut grass; chicken droppings (this really adds nutrients to the soil). The best soil to use is the darker types, and earthworms in the soil are a huge bonus factor.
The hardest part of Organic Gardening is keeping insects away from your plants, but the easiest (and best) way is to make sure that your plants are always healthy. Healthy plants are usually left alone by insects. Also, it is a good idea is to have a variety of plant species in your garden so even if there is an insect invasion that destroys one plant type, your other plants should be safe.
Another easy way of keeping your organic garden free of pest insects is by creating a habitat, which favors insect eaters (frogs, lady bugs, birds). You can create this habitat by having a source of water like a birdbath near by. There are also some household vegetables that can be used to chase away insects when doing organic gardening. These are garlic and hot peppers. Both of the two should do the job!
An easy way to reduce disease in the garden is to choose plants that have a high tolerance and plant them during their prime conditions. Many diseases spread because of excessive moisture in the air or lack of air-circulation, so choosing an ideal spot for your garden can be a huge aid.
When doing organic gardening, weeds can become a gigantic problem (literally too)! However, there is a simple way of getting through this and that is by placing sheets of newspaper under the mulch. Another method (which requires much more labor!) is to use old fashion hand pulling. You have to do this every season but, and it can get extremely boring and tiring.
Organic gardening is one of the best ways of ensuring that your vegetables and plants remain free of harmful substances and therefore are healthier! Although it may be a little more challenging and tiring to carry out, the finished product makes it all seem like a job well done!
