As times change more people on an individual and professional/business level realize the value of the evolving open source software market. Many people are still under the impression that open source means that the software is free, however, this is not always true. Why would anyone choose to use open source software such as OpenOffice.org over software such as Microsoft Office? Well, speaking from personal experience, here at The Proniit Group we have found that not only does this save us a lot capital but it also provides flexibility that we need. Added to this is the large array of freely available plug-in?s that further expand on the usability of the software. Furthermore, we receive a frequent amount of updates as and when the software is released. This ensures that we don?t have to wait for capital before we have the advantage over our competitors. At The Pronitt Group almost all of our software is open source including our operating system. The board of directors had decided that the best open source operating system to suit our needs and that of our employee?s is Ubuntu. Currently we use the Hardy Heron release and look forward to the release of Karmic Koala in October this year.

The most important thing about an open source operating system, especially for businesses is that it is almost impossible (if not, completely impossible) for your computer to EVER be threatened or infected by a virus. If that is not enough to get you of your chair and in to the realm of open source then I am afraid that I do not have any solution for you!

So what would the cons of this software be and why don?t more people use open source software?

Up to this date we have only found that there is TWO cons? on using open source and that is training our employee?s to use this software after being so accustomed to a Windows operating system. However, after careful, yet simple instructions, we were able to quickly and swiftly overcome this hurdle. You see, a release such as Ubuntu?s Hardy Heron is so usably and stable that it is almost exactly like using a Windows operating system.

The second somewhat negative effect of using an open source system of any nature is support. There can be a delay in finding the correct solution to a problem; however, with the correct amounts of persistence and perseverance anyone can locate the correct information. It helps a lot to know that there are thousands even hundreds of thousands of people out there that have complete knowledge of these systems and are willing to personally help you with your queries.
